The "Invisible" Cavity: Why 1 in 4 Adults Have Untreated Decay
By Dr. Phuong Bui, Wolff Family Dentistry
It’s a startling statistic from the CDC’s 2024 Oral Health Surveillance Report: Approximately 1 in 4 (25%) of U.S. adults have at least one untreated cavity. The most common reason for this? A lack of symptoms.
Can you have a cavity and not know it?
Yes. Most dental decay doesn't cause pain until it reaches the deep, sensitive nerves of the tooth. By the time you feel a "zing" from an ice-cold drink, the cavity has likely been there for months.
How We Find What You Can't Feel
At our Brighton office, we use technology to catch these issues while they are small and painless:
· Digital X-Rays: Seeing between the teeth where brushes can't reach.
· Intraoral Cameras: We show you high-definition photos of your teeth on a screen.
Care That Puts You First
If we do find an untreated cavity, don't worry. I am committed to a "no-surprises" policy. I will explain the procedure step-by-step, show you the materials we’ll use, and ensure you are completely comfortable before we begin. Don't wait for the pain to tell you there's a problem.
